Position Title: Cook/Baker-Health Care and Social Assistance
Location: Ancaster
Compensation: TBD
Hours: 7 shifts over 2-week period, days vary
Job Description: •    Prepare well-balanced meals that comply with the Canada Food Guide and offer a variety of foods, snacks and special needs to enhance daily living
•    Prepare and take part in the planning of desserts for special functions, gourmet dinners and five-week menu cycle
•    Keep abreast of new products in the field of nutrition and sanitation 
•     Receive food, supplies and check delivery prior to signing, problems noted and reported 
•    Ensure food is safely stored and properly labeled and dated after receiving to avoid spoilage and facilitate proper rotation (i.e. using up oldest food first)
•    Prepare food/meals within scheduled time constraints with optimal freshness and quality
•    Ensure that meals and snacks are presented to maximize visual appeal, taste and texture
•    Ensure that meals are served at appealing temperature
•    Ensure that all residents receive appropriate portions
•    Co-ordinate and participate in the proper cleaning and infection control, of the dining room, kitchen and serving areas, including but not limited to tables and bases, chairs, floor, serving carts, trays, kitchen equipment, counter tops, beverage center and storage
•    Ensure all meals are served as scheduled
•    Develop and understand a working knowledge of proper food handling techniques, WHMIS, occupational health and safety, infection control, lifting technique, disinfecting and cleaning techniques
•    Participate in fire drills, staff meetings, and training 
•    Adhere to the home’s policies and procedures 
•    Any other related duties as assigned by supervisor or Administrator
Job Requirements: •    Experience preparing food for large amounts of people 
•    Experience in a retirement home, long term care facility, or healthcare facility is an asset 
•    Must be knowledgeable and experienced in: o Canada’s Food Guide 
        o Food preparation and baking
        o Use of kitchen equipment 
        o Therapeutic diets 
        o Food allergies 
•    Must have attained OSSD or equivalent 
•    Must have some formalized training in food preparation and service 
•    The ability to read, write and comfortably communicate in English
•    Must understand oral and written instructions
•    Must be able to perform mathematical calculations for ordering food and calculating food portions
•    Food Handler’s Certification 
•    Must be able to take charge to direct and supervise others
•    Empathy and understanding for the needs of the seniors, their families and the professionals engaged in their care
•    Good health
•    No allergies to food and cleaning chemicals
•    Able to perform physical work
•    Must have a pleasant, co-operative and supportive attitude
